Browser extension
Use the MimiKey extension in Chrome and Edge to fill logins, save new ones, generate passwords and use passkeys. The extension works together with the Mac app.
How it works
The MimiKey extension doesn't store any items itself, and you never type your master password into the browser. It asks the Mac app for items that match the current website, over a local connection on your Mac. The Mac app decides whether to provide them and whether to ask you first.
To use the extension you need:
- Chrome or Edge 127 or later on macOS.
- The MimiKey Mac app, installed, signed in and unlocked.
The extension only works on https websites.
Install (beta)
During the beta, the extension isn't in the Chrome Web Store or Edge Add-ons, so you load it in developer mode:
- Download the extension
.zipfrom the download page and unzip it into a folder you'll keep (don't move or delete it after loading). - In Chrome, go to
chrome://extensions(in Edge,edge://extensions). - Turn on Developer mode.
- Click Load unpacked and choose the folder you unzipped.
- MimiKey appears in the list when it has loaded. Pin it to the toolbar for easy access.
The local connection between the extension and the Mac app also has to be registered separately; during the beta, the MimiKey team helps you set it up.
Permissions the extension requests:
| Permission | Used for |
|---|---|
| Read and change data on https websites | Detecting login fields, showing the MimiKey icon, filling logins |
| activeTab, scripting | Detecting and filling forms in the current tab |
| storage | Briefly remembering the username from the first step of a two-step login (see below) |
| nativeMessaging | Talking to the Mac app on your computer |
Fill a login
- Go to the sign-in page of a site you have a login for.
- A MimiKey icon appears in the username or password field. Click it to see the matching items for this site.
- Choose an item, and the extension fills in the username and password.
The extension never submits the form for you — you click the site's sign-in button yourself.
If the Mac app is locked, the icon prompts you to unlock; unlock MimiKey on your Mac and try again. Whether you also need to confirm in the Mac app depends on the Fill confirmation level in Preferences. See AutoFill.
You can also click the MimiKey button in the browser toolbar to search for items for the current site in a pop-up.
Two-step logins
Many sites ask for your username on one page and your password on the next. The extension remembers the username you typed in the first step for the current tab — the username only, never the password, for up to 30 minutes, and only until you close the browser — so that when you save at the second step, the login is complete.
Save a new login
After you type a username and password on a site and sign in, a Save to MimiKey (保存到 MimiKey) card appears on the page:
- Click Save (保存) to create a new login for this site.
- If you already have a login for this site with the same username but a different password, the card asks whether to update the saved password (更新已保存的密码?). Choose Update (更新) or Save as new item (另存为新条目).
- If an identical username and password are already saved, no card appears.
- Click Don't save (不保存) to dismiss the card.
Generate a password
On a sign-up or change-password page, click the MimiKey icon in the password field and choose Generate and fill a new password (生成新密码并填入). You can change the length and character types, and click Another (换一个) to get a different one. The generated password is only filled into the page; once you've submitted the form on the site, save it with the Save to MimiKey card.
Passkeys
When a site asks to create a passkey, the extension shows "Create a passkey with MimiKey?" (用 MimiKey 创建通行密钥?). When a site asks you to sign in with a passkey, it lists the passkeys you've saved for that site (用通行密钥登录). Choose Other options (其他方式) to hand the request back to the browser's own flow.
MimiKey currently supports only ES256 passkeys; if a site doesn't accept that algorithm, you'll see a message that the passkey can't be created. See Passkeys and verification codes.
